Laval at the end of the 18th century had 15,000 inhabitants, more than 1/3 of whom lived off the impact of linen. Thus, a thriving textile economy developed within the city linked to trade with the Spanish colonies in America. This prosperity is expressed through the development of remarkable properties which occupy the heights of the city and the construction of private mansions for the bourgeoisie. These buildings meet the needs of a new urban elite keen to stay close to their business while enjoying an aesthetic closer to the country properties of the traditional aristocracy. Thus this type of building is one of the first civil buildings to break the logic of medieval town planning.

The Périer du Bignon is a perfect representation of this, its building was divided into two: the western part which was intended for family use and the eastern part which included the stores , calenders , press and offices. This little gem is the work of Pierre Périer du Bignon who built it in 1777. Born in Laval in 1732, this man was a rich Laval industrialist and politician who became rich thanks to the linen trade. Laval's fourth richest man, Pierre Périer was the city's richest merchant in 1791. On the eve of the French Revolution, he joined politics and abandoned industry, which cost him his life. Indeed, during the Terror, the latter was classified at the same time as the Le Mans du Chalais family as counter-revolutionaries. He will therefore be sentenced to prison because of his political ideas and guillotined in 1793 in Angers.

The hotel then had a succession of different owners . It first passed into the hands of Pierre Périer's grandson, Gabriel de la Broise . Then to the Foucault de Laubinière in 1817, and finally to the Duchemin de Vaubernier in 1834. The latter kept it until 1898, when the property was transferred to a religious civil society which set up a school for girls and a hospice there. the name of Nazareth. The civil society of Sainte-Marie d'Evron launched the construction of the chapel around 1900, today a reception room, against the west gable of the main building. At the same time she undertook the redevelopment of the interior of the old hotel, traces of which are still present in the current renovation of the Périer du Bignon.

During the First World War, the hotel became a volunteer hospital in 1915 and remained in operation from July 1, 1915 to December 31, 1918. There were 2 large rooms with 30 beds where the sickest and those undergoing surgery were located.
